Supported Housing Officer - Afghan Resettlement Programme

£32,134 + Benefits | Bristol | Full Time | 2-year contract | 37 hours per week

At Curo, we know that getting keys to your own home is just the start. We need a caring Supported Housing Officer to support refugee families settle into their new homes in Bristol. You will give them the practical help they need to build independent, successful lives.

This hands-on role puts you at the heart of family life during an important time of transition You will be there from day one - meeting families at their new front door, helping them understand how everything works, and supporting them as they get to know their new community.

You will work with as part of our Afghan Resettlement Programme team. You will provide intensive, personalised support that helps families move from uncertainty to stability. Your role is about more than housing - you are helping families to rebuild their lives with dignity and hope. 

What you will do

• Welcome families to their new homes and show them everything they need to know
• Explain rent agreements, how the house works and health and safety in simple ways
• Help families register with gas, electricity and water companies and manage money
• Help with applications for Universal Credit and other financial support
• Watch for early signs of problems and help quickly
• Help families access local schools, doctors and community services
• Build good relationships with neighbours and the wider community
• Report any safety or welfare concerns
• Work closely with other team members
• Keep accurate records and help with progress reports
• Deliver essential housing management requirements

About you

You really want to help people during life-changing times. You understand that small things matter, and that building trust takes time, especially with families who may be worried after difficult experiences.

You need:

• Experience supporting people in housing, homelessness or refugee services
• Understanding of tenant rights, housing benefit and Universal Credit
• Excellent communication skills and ability to explain difficult things clearly
• Patience and cultural sensitivity when working with people who have experienced trauma
• Ability to work independently while being part of a supportive team

It would help if you had:

• Personal experience of moving countries or working with refugees
• Language skills in Dari, Pashto or other Afghan languages
• Knowledge of Bristol community services and support networks
• Understanding of Afghan cultural practices and family life

You will be based in Bristol and from home. You will visit families and community places regularly. You need to be flexible as you support families at times that work for them, including some evenings and weekends.
